Riding with the growth of the global photonics market, Taiwan’s photonics industry’s total production value continued expanding. Better than the original prediction, Taiwan’s photonics industry’s total production value in 2005 broke through the NT$1 trillion milestone and reached NT$1.15 trillion (USD35.8 billion). Although the result was quite good, growth was not as strong as before. In the next few years, the growth rate of Taiwan’s photonics industry will be around 14% in average.

As to Taiwan’s photonics industry’s production value of 2006, among all six major areas, the production value of Flat Panel Displays reached $25.2 billion USD (mainly for TFT-LCD panels) and had the largest proportion. Display industry proportion has been gradually increasing its share in Taiwan’s photonics industry. Taiwan’s second largest photonics field was optical storage, whose production value was USD7.3 billion.

In 2006, the top ten products of Taiwan photonics Industry were TFT-LCD, TN／STN-LCD, CD\DVD–R\RW Drives and recordable CD\DVD-R. Additionally, there were also digital cameras, image scanners, and downstream packaging of LED products. In recent three years, the market for optical components has been expanding and optical components have become one of the ten greatest photonics products.
