Taiwan Optics Industry Overview

The Taiwanese optics industry is aiming to be in the leading position in terms of production volume of DSC (digital still cameras) and CCM (compact camera modules) OEM/ODM market by Q3, 2007. The Taiwanese optics industry showed excellent performance in the shipments of downstream application products, such as DSC, CCM and LENS, although the growth rate of the global DSC or CCM market was not as strong in 2006 as before.

According to a report in NE (Nikkei Electronics), the shipments of DSC were 91.71 million units in 2006 and will be over 100 million units in 2007. The shipments of the Taiwanese optics industry will occupy almost 50% of the global market.

In 2006, the production value of the global optics market reached US$ 13.3 billion. The Taiwanese optics market was US$ 0.75 billion which accounted for 5.6% of the global market. Basically, the global market share of Taiwanese optics products was around 5% ~ 7% of the international optics market in the past few years. The production value of the Taiwanese optics industry will maintain a high growth rate with an annual rate of 13.3% and US$ 0.75 billion in 2006 to US$ 0.85 billion in 2007.

For the products applied by optics in Taiwan, the top applications are CCM optics, DSC lens and optics and optical engine optics without lens. These three applications of optics contribute 70% share of total Taiwan optics market revenues in 2006.

Due to the huge demand of optics which are applied for DSC, CCM or for other lenses, PIDA forecasts that the rate of the growth of Taiwanese optics revenues will be 13% ~ 15% through 2009 and will reach US$ 1.2 billion in 2009.

The Taiwanese optics industry is also focusing on the development of advanced optical technology such as: GMO (Glass Modeling Optics), automobile lenses, high precious plastic aspherical lenses, biophotonics instruments and other opto-electronics products.

Optics technical applications have shown to have wide application possibilities in daily life. Not only can the traditional lens be seen in cameras, but also new optics technologies can be found in emerging fields such as: DOE optics, micro-optics and GMO (Glass Modeling Optics), etc. The Taiwanese optics industry hopes to play a more aggressive role in the future in the global optics market.
